I've tentatively put this article at "Chinese box turtle" because that's what they called it when I got the turtle, and it's really the only indication I've got of common usage. However, I'd be more than willing to move and change the names around if there's a more common/better name. As for the scientific names, I'd like a more recent argument as to whether Cuora or Cistoclemmys is correct, and have abbreviated it C. because both have good arguments, in my opinion. An expert would be appreciated for clearing up the naming convention here. --Keitei (talk) 02:07, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cistoclemmys

[edit]

The problem with Cistoclemmys is, that this Genus is only based on weak morphologic esp. osteologic characters that are not consistent. Furthermore, the current genetic knowledge does not support Cistoclemmys at all, since flavomarginata is a sister species of Cuora yunnanensis and nests close together with the pani-trifasciata-aurocapitata-zhoui clade. C.cyclornata, which would be morphologically a "Pyxiclemmys" (as trifasciata) nest close tu Cuora galbinifrons sensu lato and C.mccordi, which should be far more Cistoclemmys etc.. All this makes Cistoclemmys and Pyxiclemmys very vague and probably invalid.

Regarding "Chinese box turtle" -> yes, it is often called this way in english, but the other names are used as well. The problem with "Chinese" is, that it does not just occur in China and turtles like trifasciata far more deserve ths naming, thus the name referring to a morphologic characteris better, if available. The same has happened with galbinifrons sensu lato, where the names were recently "improved"
